The International Association for Democracy (IAD) is an NGO that works to defend and advance democracy around the globe. We link people with their governments and lobby governments to promote, strengthen and safeguard democratic institutions, processes, norms and values at home and abroad. We also work towards raising public awareness about the current state of democracy around the world and what should be done to better defend and promote democracy.
IAD is looking for a Legal Advisor to develop and implement strategies which result in the provision of well-rounded legal advice to IAD’s senior management and to the organisation as well as overseeing legal processes. This role is expected to take 3-5 hours per week.
Objectives of this Role

Provide legal opinion as required

Continuously monitor compliance with legal obligation and advise management accordingly

Identify legal risks and ensure that where legal risks have been identified, appropriate courses of action have been taken

Review and draft contracts and agreements

Assess periodically the organisation’s need for particular legal skills in-house

Ensure consistent procedures and communication processes are in place to establish goals, clarify responsibilities, engage team members of the Legal team, utilise their strengths, share feedback and adjust plans

Act as a charity trustee in IAD’s Board
Skills and Qualifications

Passion for promoting democracy, rule of law and human rights as well as IAD’s mission

Knowledge of law and legal issues in an European context, particularly in Scotland would be an advantage
-
Good planning and organisation skills and a proven ability to delicately solve sensitive matters

Ability to adjust quickly to change
Preferred Qualifications

Track record of providing accurate and effective legal counsel

Previous experience of providing legal advice to an NGO

Knowledge of the legal context in the UK and the EU
